Priest quits church for acting career

Thiruvananthapuram: A Christian priest in Kerala has quit his clerical position apparently after facing objections from the church for acting in a recently released Malayalam film.

Johnson Karoor, 36, who acted in ‘Nirakkazhcha' by debut director Anish, claimed that he quit priesthood to assert his creative freedom. “It was my decision to go out. I thought for a long time before taking the decision,” Mr. Johnson said.

Mr. Johnson, who was a priest in Malankara Catholic church, played a negative role in the movie in which Italian actor Vincenzo Bocciarelli was in the lead. Mr. Johnson admitted that that he quit the church as he could not dedicate himself to priesthood and wanted to pursue a career in acting.

“I have already been cast in ‘Criminal Love,' Anish's next film. I am now trying to pursue my education and acting,” he said.

Mr. Anish said his film had got an Italian distributor who would release the film with subtitles in 600 theatres in that country.

It was shown in the Maratea film festival in Italy last month. — PTI
