Agreeing to Disagree
By
Fr. Anand Muttungal |
The phrase “agreeing to disagree” technically means that
two people with difference of opinions ‘set aside an
irreconcilable difference in order to maintain a civil
dialogue.’ This phrase was first noted in Josiah
Wedgwood’s writings in 1785. In simple terms it means
that neither of the party is convinced by the other’s
opinion, and therefore, respect each other’s opinion and
agree that both are entitled to entertain own thoughts
about the subject without falling apart from each other.
It should be a mantra of people leading public life like
religious leaders, social activists, political leaders
etc. We might think about how to express disagreements?

Praise of Criticism
By
Fr. Anand Muttungal |
In the
recent times one of the Church heads who is very
critical about the Conference of Diocesan Priests of
India wrote in his long critical letter addressed to the
Catholic Conference of Bishops of India (CCBI) that “As
a whole CDPI is a colourful balloon attractive from
outside, empty inside. A
wonderful name is chosen but nothing substantial in the
statutes.” It is very true of the organization. In the
real sense it is supposed to be one of the biggest
organizations of diocesan clergy but it has been
slogging behind the Heads of the church for its
existence. He has rightly said in his critical
evaluation and because of this, it could not establish
itself till now. The Canon 287(1) provides freedom to
the diocesan clergy to form an association for their
well being but over the years the Indian diocesan clergy
has not been using their right. He has rightly pointed
out how ineffectively its statutes are made.

“Indian
Christian Martyrs’ Day”
by
Fr. Anand Muttungal |
Religious
plurality and tolerance has been the spirit of India.
Yet instances of Christian martyrdom began with St.
Thomas, the Apostle. After this instance we have some
cases of priests, nuns and laypersons being murdered on
the process of setting up schools, social work centres
or health services. Until the Orissa massacre we heard
stray incidents where one is killed for preaching the
word of God or chose to die to proclaim the faith in
Christ. Probably after two thousand years the Church is
retuning to its beginnings where hundreds died to
proclaim the message of Christ.

Oh Minister, “Forget the
‘Tie’ and Go For Developing Education”
By Fr. Anand Muttungal |
If we consider
that these dress habits are part of the British slavery
then it should be treated as narrow mindedness and
looking for cheap publicity. But if it is seen as a
desire to bring a changing in the dressing habits of
people according to our climate, then we must go for
designing a new set of dress as per our climate. It can
be used across the country except a few states which has
cold climate. It would be most important that before we
take sides on the issue, we must read these statements
between the lines because it is often said that one who
has very little to show as achievements always try to be
in media through controversy. Read

Letters are winged messengers
Rev C.S. Joseph of Kunnamkulam , a
missionary of the Mar Thoma church, used to write to me
long letters, often enclosing tracts.. Those were early
days of my journey of faith, He took pains to refer to
great examples about men of faith, living and dead and
words of encouragement from the Bible. Those letters
were like water to a thirsty soul. I wasn't prompt in
replying to his letters but that wouldn't discourage him
from writing.

Charism, Religious Life
and the Catholic Church
(Church Restoration Series I)
By Fr. Anand Muttungal
The charism and religious
life are two sides of dedicated life of Catholic men and
women. In general ‘charism’ refers to the spiritual
graces and qualifications granted to every Christian to
perform his or her task in the Church. When it comes to
religious congregations it is explained that all
congregations are called to manifest the Gospel through
a particular objective. In these lines we have focused
religious organizations working in the area of care of
the orphans, sick, poor, rural development, women
empowerment, proclamation of the word, education,
communication etc.

applicable everywhere.
A Bishop can not punish a member on
the basis of attending a meeting in another place. He
is not even expected to issue such a Kalpana or
