A priceless painting by Renaissance
master Titian in one of Venice's most picturesque basilicas has
suffered water damage after firefighters doused it while battling a
nearby blaze.
The fire broke out at the seminary next
to the Santa Maria della Salute basilica, a 17th century
octagonal-shaped church that dominates the view of the Grand Canal.

Repairs: Titian masterpiece David and Goliath in the Santa Maria
della Salute basilica in Venice was damaged by water

Damage: Firefighters tackling a nearby blaze sprayed the roof of the
basilica with water, causing it to seep through the roof
Venice's museum superintendent Vittorio
Sgarbi said firefighters doused the basilica as well and that water
seeped through the roof, damaging Titian's 'David and Goliath'.
The masterpiece is one of three Titians
that line the ceiling of the sacristy.
The other two were undamaged, but Mr
Sgarbi has ordered 'David and Goliath' be removed for repairs.
The damage is not believed to be
serious.

Concern: A firefighter boat is moored in front of the Santa Maria
della Salute basilica, which dominates the Grand Canal
